I am reading nonfiction books on writing. While many have valuable information, most of them are boring! I can't bring myself to finish a lot of them. I am sorry to say but, if writing were truly the way they make it seem, I would have quit years ago.
Why is it so difficult to make an interesting book on this subject? Books on crafting poetry seem even worse than fiction. I shudder to think of what [books on writing] nonfiction books are like.
It isn't that they don't exist. You just have to go through a lot before you get to the gold.
So, that being said, here are some I do recommend:
Bird by Bird~Anne Lamott
On Writing~Stephen King
Pen on Fire~Barbara DeMarco-Barrett
Pocket Muse~Monica Wood (It has fun prompts and stuff.)
Writing the Life Poetic~Sage Cohen (Best book on poetry and poets I have read so far.)
*I realize some of these are Writer's Digest books. I am just telling you what I found helpful/entertaining.*
Do you have any favorite books on writing/poetry that wouldn't put me to sleep? Let me know!!!
I totally agree with you. Those are all on my list, too.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any others?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Most are a snore.
ReplyDeleteI really like 'Hooked'. It is an older book about how to write the first chapter.
Many 'newer' books just copy older ideas.
